MINAMIDA Hitomi
(南田 仁美)

Welcome!

I am a Lecturer in Japanese Linguistics in the School of Languages, Literatures, and Cultures at the University of Maryland, College Park. I am also a Temporary Research Support Specialist in the Department of Linguistics at Cornell University.

I received my Ph.D. in Linguistics from Cornell University in August 2023. My dissertation, supervised by Prof. John Whitman, is downloadable here. I received my B.A. from Osaka University (大阪大学) in Japan and my M.A. from Syracuse University, where my advisor was Prof. Jaklin Kornfilt.

Here is my CV.

I am interested in Japanese and Korean linguistics. My work on Japanese and Korean linguistics spans syntax (relative clauses, wh-islands), phonology (pitch accent, prosody), and historical linguistics (accent shift). I have also done experimental work. A distinctive feature of my research is that I look at Japanese and Korean through the lens of various varieties of these languages. Some of my work has focused on Osaka Japanese. (I am from Osaka and my native language is Osaka Japanese.) I have also worked on Tokyo Japanese, Fukuoka Japanese, Kobayashi Japanese, Seoul Korean, Busan Korean, and Daegu Korean.

If you are a Mac user, you should be able to see the Japanese scripts on this website in Osaka font!
